There are two types of designers: the ones who are laser focused on joining a design firm, and the designers who are open to new ways and career paths where they can apply their talent.
You’re that second type. You want to find a supportive team that will invest in your growth. You also want to be proud of the high-quality work you do every day.
We are Ottawa Business Interiors (OBI), and this is where you belong.
As a family-owned and operated furniture dealer, we’ve worked hard for over 40 years to be our customers’ advocate. That’s why we’ve aligned ourselves with the finest commercial manufacturers in the world. We’re proud to be the exclusive Herman Miller furniture dealer for the region.
Our success is built on impeccable service that prioritizes people, productivity and value to create more than a place to work— we create a space to succeed.
We’re looking to hire a design and application specialist to add to our team, and we hope our search ends with you.
Design and Application Specialist
Your primary goal in this role will be to design furniture layouts to support our sales process. Sometimes you’ll produce drawings and details to be a part of a quote or RFP. Other times you’ll be working within the implementation process. Whatever the output, you’ll succeed because of your unique combination of skills and drive.
Your work will begin by pulling together a variety, and ever-changing combination of inputs and information. You may have client communications, purchase orders, architectural drawings, and/or proposals. From there, you’ll go on site to get real-world measurements, and find all the elements of the space that you don’t see in a drawing, from lighting and windows to electrical outlets and HVAC.
With all of that information, you’ll create floor plans, 3D aids and renderings, drawings, part lists, and provide recommendations on finishes. Sometimes you’ll have direct input from the client or sales team, and sometimes you’ll need to trust your own judgement. Your research skills will come in particularly handy as you dig to find the best solutions for your customers.
Everything you create will be pristine, because the implementation will hang on the details in your work. You’re used to that, and know you can deliver.
As our business grows, we’re adapting and changing how we do things. This is a perfect time to join us, because you’ll have the chance to explore other responsibilities, including sales or account management, if you’re interested. You’ll have a hand in shaping your career here.
The Right Fit:
We care about who you are as much as what you’ve done. You’re a great fit for this opportunity because you’re:
- Resilient – you love when the pace is high and the pressure is on. You rise to the occasion when the stakes are high.
- Great with people – you know how to make people feel heard and understood. You also know how to put out fires quickly, preserving relationships and trust.
- Courageous – when you make a mistake, you admit it. You can look failure in the eyes, and turn it into growth.
- Collaborative – you enjoy solving problems with a team. You ask for help when you need it, and offer your insights openly.
Above all, you care. The outcomes matter deeply to you, and those include our clients’ success, the bottom-line impact, and the relationships you build along the way.
This is a full-time permanent position, working out of our impeccably designed and furnished office. You’ll mostly work from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, with some flexibility if you need it. There is travel in this job, as you go to job sites. You’ll rarely have to travel more than one hour away, and if you drive, you’ll get mileage paid.
Salary is expected to be between $45,000 - $55,000, commensurate with experience. We also offer competitive health benefits, a cell phone allowance, and potential team bonuses.
Why You’ll Love Working Here:
It comes down to the people – they make this a great place to work.
Our team is vibrant and close-knit. We work together and in close proximity, so we bounce ideas around, and support one another. Our leadership is accessible, engaged and working on projects alongside the rest of the staff.
