Environment and Natural Resources actively collaborates to protect, manage and restore ecosystem health, promote environmental stewardship and support the wise use of natural resources for the benefit of ecosystems, which include the people of the Northwest Territories.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has a mandate to promote and support the sustainable use and development of natural resources and to protect, conserve and enhance the Northwest Territories (NWT) environment for the social and economic benefit of all residents.
Located in Yellowknife, and reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Environment and Climate Change, the Director, Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change is accountable for the development and implementation of strategies, legislation, policies, procedures, regulations, and the delivery of programs and services related to the protection, conservation and enhancement of the environment, with particular emphasis on, but not limited to the following areas:
• Climate Change;
• Conservation and Protected Areas;
• Environmental Impact Assessment;
• Cumulative Impact Monitoring and the Environmental Audit; and
• Implementation of the NWT Knowledge Agenda.
These areas require the Director, Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change to understand and consider Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) interests and integrate these into the strategic initiatives of the department. Considerable expertise in climate change resilience and adaptation, integrated conservation and resource management, as well as current knowledge of strategic environmental stewardship initiatives is required.
The Director, Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change will oversee the management of multiple projects, set Divisional priorities, and effectively manage financial and human resources by developing budgets, assigning priorities, approving work plans, and motivating staff while ensuring adherence to GNWT policies and directives.
The Director, Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change participates in interdivisional and interdepartmental initiatives as a member of the Department's Senior Management Committee including providing advice to the Assistant Deputy Minister, the Deputy Minister, the Minister and committees of the NWT Legislative Assembly. This includes the provision of non-legal counsel and advice to other territorial departments and agencies and assisting in the development of programs, strategies and positions to support these GNWT program initiatives.
The Director, Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change will be expected to possess strong communication skills and the ability to foster collaborative relationships and partnerships with territorial, federal and Indigenous governments and organizations, as well as, regional and national bodies, industry, academia, and non-government organizations.
Typically, the above qualifications are attained by a relevant Master’s degree, plus 10 years of progressive experience, including a minimum of 7 years as a manager in relevant program areas.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
The salary range for this position is from $60.88 per hour to $86.97 per hour (approximately $118,716 - $169,592) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450.
