CN Public Affairs is recruiting for a Public Affairs Manager for Western Canada, with a focus on British Columbia and in particular the Lower Mainland, based in Vancouver, who will support the Senior Manager (based in Montreal) in delivering on the team’s overall mandate.
As the face of Public Affairs and as a vital company liaison to various external stakeholder groups, this high profile person will be a self-starter, with a strong background in issues management, community and government relations, communications and event planning. In addition to relevant employment experience, the ideal candidate will be able to identify, counsel and solve complex community issues, and will have fostered positive relations with local communities, municipal, provincial and federal officials.
- Develop positive relationships, seek endorsements and support from stakeholders, including but not limited to mayors, councillors, provincial and federal elected officials, political staff, officials, community leaders, organizations, chambers of commerce, etc. in communities in which CN operates.
- Manage issues with local communities in which CN operates, notably proximity, equipment and infrastructures issues.
- Act as trusted advisor to CN colleagues on public affairs matters and provide expertise on strategic projects, issues management and prepare all aspects of communications, including planning events, drafting materials such as speaking remarks, scenarios, memos, and presentations for public appearances of senior executives and colleagues from other business units.
- Provide advice on community sponsorships and donations and be the public face of CN at sponsored events.
- Record all the interactions in a stakeholder relations digital platform.
- Issues management including being on call on weekends from time to time for the entire network and by the nature of the job, to be available outside normal hours for emergencies.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience, in communications, public relations, politics or stakeholder engagement;
- A university degree or applicable diploma in communications, journalism, political science, law or related;
- A demonstrated ability to ask relevant questions and treat sensitive information with discretion;
- The ability to work autonomously as a contributing member of a North America wide team and be able to build strong relationships with colleagues across the business;
- An ability to be available 24/7 during the business week along with periodical on-call on weekends for emergencies;
- Be available for travel;
- An ability to be flexible and adapt easily to change;
- Strong writing skills and basic knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Power Point, Excel);
- Bilingualism is an asset.
